Since the discovery of the defective CFTR gene in 1989, much has been done in the way of research on cystic fibrosis. There is also a tremendous amount of research that relates to cystic fibrosis, even if CF is not its main focus. With this in mind, the main purpose of the Utah Valley Institute of Cystic Fibrosis is to promote and encourage additional education, research, synthesis and dissemination of research findings that relates to the amelioration of cystic fibrosis pathology. We also desire to help fund clinical trials of promising therapies for cystic fibrosis.

The Utah Valley Institute of Cystic Fibrosis was organized in January 1999 as a non-profit corporation in the state of Utah. The founders had noticed that there was a great deal of information related to cystic fibrosis, but the synthesis of this information and the application of research findings to clinical practice were often lacking. They felt that anyone who was involved (patients, parents, professionals, researchers, students, etc.) with cystic fibrosis could cooperate in the effort to improve treatment for cystic fibrosis persons by a process of mutual education.  The founders also believed that there were effective therapies that were being overlooked because they were nutritional in nature, or because the substances involved could not be patented.  It was felt that information about such therapies should be disseminated to patients and their families for discussion with their physicians.  Hence, this website!
