ANNOUNCEMENT, 2 November 1999
The Utah Valley Institute of Cystic Fibrosis (UVICF), a non-profit educational organization founded by CF parents, is pleased to report the development of a new product by the chemists at Theranaturals, Inc. ( theranat@fiber.net) of Orem, Utah. The product, called GSH Plus, represents in our opinion a significant breakthrough for users of inhaled reduced glutathione (GSH). Each capsule contains a measured dose of reduced glutathione (GSH; minimum 98.6% purity and endotoxin-free), plus a measured amount of a buffer (sodium bicarbonate, 100% pure). When the contents of the capsule are dissolved in a measured amount of distilled water, this yields a GSH sodium salt solution that is approximately isotonic and whose pH is approximately 5.5-5.95.  (We understand that Theranaturals' customers include IRB sufferers, who ingest this buffered form of GSH.)

Three CF individuals who had previously used inhaled free acid (unbuffered) GSH, have been using this new product for about one month now. (Two additional individuals are just beginning, as well.) The three individuals report significantly reduced irritation upon inhalation of GSH Plus, compared to unbuffered GSH (whose pH is about 3.0). One individual who had been so irritated by unbuffered GSH inhalation that he had to completely stop, was subsequently able to resume GSH inhalation with GSH Plus with little or no irritation. An added benefit was that the elimination of irritation allowed a significantly larger dose of GSH to be inhaled by these individuals than had heretofore been possible. All other benefits of GSH use these individuals had previously experienced with unbuffered GSH, such as thinned mucus, increased energy, and so forth, were all still present with GSH Plus.

GSH Plus advances the use of inhaled GSH in several important ways:

1) The pH adjustment almost completely eliminates irritation to the lung during inhalation.

2) The osmolality is virtually isotonic when used as directed.

3) No mixing or measuring or elaborate handling of the GSH is required by the user. All one has to do is measure the liquid that is added to the contents of the capsule.

The UVICF believes that GSH Plus has tremendous potential to improve the health of CF individuals. Of course, consult with your medical professional before changing any aspect of your treatment!

Theranaturals, Inc. ( theranat@fiber.net) informs us that GSH Plus will be available for shipment both domestically and overseas. Please note that the UVICF has no financial connection to Theranaturals, Inc. and that this information is provided solely as a public service to the CF community.
